Background

Currently there are 79 open public schools across the city.  Another 7 charter schools intend to open next school year (2 other approved charters have deferred their opening until the following school year), which will bring the total to 86 schools operating by Fall 2008 compared to about 130 operating schools pre-Katrina (though researchers suggest those facilities were more than 30% overcrowded at the time).

Of the 86 schools, Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) manages 17 schools (5 traditional and 12 charter schools), Recovery School District (RSD) manages 67 schools (33 traditional and 34 charter schools), and LA Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) manages 2 schools (2 charter schools).  In total, New Orleans has 38 traditional and 48 charter schools available next school year.

Based on the official school year count for 2007-2008, there are now about 32,000 students officially enrolled in public schools across the city, compared to approximately 65,000 students pre-Katrina.
